South Island - New Zealand

The wild and wonderful South Island of New Zealand offers everything from remote trekking, skiing and fantastic beauty spots through to whale-watching. Within an area the same size as England and Wales, you can vist a miriad of places and each is different from the other. In the north there is the fabulous Marborough sounds and the Marlborough wine growing district with towns like Nelson to explore. As you come down the east coast you pass through Kaikoura where you can go out whale watching and see Sperm whales. Hanmer Springs offers fantastic scenery, thermal springs and some great skiing. Mount Cook is New Zealand’s highest mountain and to get there you drive west from Christchurch through Tekapo and then on to mount Cook. The major ski resort of Mt Hutt is also not far from Christchurch. On the south Island you caravan also roam free over tranquil meadows in a hot-air balloon, get up close to a glacier, enjoy the fruits of the southernmost wine-making region in the world, and even get a glimpse into Antarctica.

The South Island is made up of many different towns and cities that all hold their own delights and treasures that are well worth a look on your travels with such town as Queenstown, Timaru, Temuka, Geraldine, Pleasant Point and Peel Forest being just some of the many outstanding attractions. With the popular tourist destination of Christchurch being the main access point of the South Island, this city captivates and inspires anyone that enters it! With is architecturally designed buildings, beautiful gardens and landscaped streets you can spend your entire holiday just wandering the through this vibrant city and explore it many wonders. In the far south are Invercargilland Dunedin, which are two of the South Islands major cities. The major ski fields of the South island are located around Queenstown and Wanaka and these include Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Cardrona and Treble Cone. These four resorts are probably the best known ski resorts in New Zealand. Also in the south is the fantastic Milford Sound region and the Fox and Franz Joseph Glaciers. This west coast region is one of the most beautiful in New Zealand and the mountain and coastal scenery is absolutely spectacular so why not come for a New Zealand holiday and spend a week or so on the South Island.
