Heron Island is a true coral cay set right on the Great Barrier Reef. This is one of those special places in the world where you can enjoy a part of nature that is still pristine and absolutely unspoiled. There are only a few places like this that are right on the reef and Heron Island provides the best experience of them all. The island is situated well off the Queensland coast and is accessed by fast ferry from Gladstone. The distance from the coast means less land pollution and greater water clarity and hence the island is a paradise for divers. This is probably one of the top five dive destinations along the entire length of the Great Barrier Reef. The Island is run in conjunction with a very small resort on nearby Wilson Island where accommodation for a very limited number of people is provided in up market tent cabins for those who would like the experience of holidaying on a truly deserted island.
The standard of the resort is superb with several levels of quality available Every thing has a view of the beach and ocean and you can walk straight off your balcony and start snorkeling. The resort has a fantastic reputation for the quality of the food and the restaurant has a wonderful island atmosphere. Divers are extremely well catered for with plenty of different sites on offer. Dive masters and instructors are available on the island so if you want to become accredited you can do it here. There are also fishing trips available to nearby reefs so if you would like to catch a coral trout or a red emporer for your dinner then why not have a go.
