Skiing in Victoria, will take you to see one of Australia’s most beautiful regions as well as giving you the opportunity to ski in some superb alpine locations. The ski fields region is located in the Australian Alps which are located in the north east of the state and north east from Melbourne. As most people access the ski fields from Melbourne it is important to note that the furthest one away is only about three and a half hours drive away and this drive will take you through scenery that is typically Australian and stunning in its beauty.

Mount Buller is the closest of the ski resorts to Melbourne and also the busiest. There is plenty of on snow accommodation and the Bourke St run is the busiest of them all as the accommodation, restaurants, cafes and hotel line either side of the run. There is also accommodation in the town of Mansfield, that lies at the foot of the mountain. Mount Buffalo is the most beautiful of all the mountains and is popular in the summer as well as the winter. It has a range of bushwalking trails through the magnificent National Park. For skiiers, the facilities are limited although cross country skiing is popular. Other sports like hang gliding and abseiling are very popular here.

Falls Creek is the largest of the Victorian Skiing locations. It is located the furthest into the mountains and usually has the most reliable snow falls. Having said that, the three major ski resorts all have snow making equipment to enhance natures supply if required. Falls Creek has lots of on snow accommodation or you can stay in Mount Beauty at the foot of the range. Close to Falls Creek and a little further to the east is Mt Hotham which is the highest of the Victorian snowfields. Hotham is unique in that it has lots of on snow accommodation but it is all located at the top of the ski runs rather than at the bottom. The accommodation is either side of the Alpine highway and the ski runs plunge down into the valleys below. It is a spectacularly beautiful place when the snow gums are covered with snow and the winter action is in full swing. Other accommodation is also available at Dinner Plain which is about fifteen kilometers from Hotham and Mt Hotham is the only Australian skiing location that has an airfield that can be accessed by domestic flights.
