New South Wales Skiing

Skiing in New South Wales (NSW), Australia is one of the things that every skier should experience. In New South Wales you will find some of the best ski resorts in the world and ski and snow conditions to rival anything you may have experienced in other regions. The Snowy Mountains in Australia’s south east provide excellent terrain to challenge the beginner or the experienced skier. The snow season begins in June and lasts through till October. There is also a huge number of tours and other points of interest in the region to make your holiday complete.

The main ski resorts are located at Thredbo, Perisher Valley, Smiggin Holes, Charlottes Pass and Mt Selwyn. Perisher Blue, as the ski resort is known, is a 2½ hour drive from Canberra which is the nearest airport and around 6 hours drive from Sydney. The ski resort operates from June until October. There are around 50 lifts so there is no shortage of capacity to take you up the mountain. The longest run is around 3 kilometres and the terrain is suitable for all levels of expertise. Smiggin Holes is located next door to Perisher and you can ski from one to the other. If you choose to stay off mountain the ski tube from Jindabyne will deliver you right to the slopes. Thredbo Village is located 31 kilometres into the mountains from Jindabyne and here you will find Australia’s longest runs. Karels T bar to Fridays Flat is 5.9 kilometres long. Travelling times from Canberra and Sydney are nearly the same as Perisher Valley. There are 14 lifts with an uphill capacity of 17851 skiers per hour. You can also ski at Charlottes Pass where there are fewer crowds and 6 ski lifts or at Mt Selwyn which is located nearby.

New South Wales snow resorts can be accessed in a number of ways. Sydney has an international and domestic airport and is the closest to the resorts. Domestic flights operate to Canberra. You can drive to all resorts on sealed highways. Rental vehicles are available from all airports. Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Blue all fly to Canberra.
