Known as the 'gold mining capital of Victoria', back in its day, Ballarat is the largest inland cities located within this amazing state of Australia. It is also well known for it history and heritage that can be seen on the streets and within the old building that still remain standing to this very day. Located just 105km north-west of Melbourne, the city of Ballarat has such a wide variety of things to see and do, you will be hard pressed to fit it all into just one holiday adventure.

Back in 1855 Ballarat was booming with the findings of gold and as the years past by more and more building sprung up to support the growing number of people who came to find their share of wealth. Today the city retains much of its rich gold heritage in the form of opulent buildings, fountains, and tourist attractions which celebrate the city's history. Visit Sovereign Hill while you are here so you get a taste of how it was really done back in the day or perhaps you would like to learn about the history of the town so take a trip down memory lane at the Eureka Centre which is the site of the 1854 Eureka Stockade Rebellion where miners and officials engaged in a bloody battle over miner's rights.

Around the town are some spectacular buildings which are worth visiting, including the marvellous Victorian buildings along Lydiard Street. There is a beautiful lake in Ballarat called Lake Wendouree which was the rowing course during the 1956 Olympic Games. Nearby are the extremely attractive Botanical Gardens. You can also visit the Ballarat Wildlife Park and the interesting and fun Great Southern Woolshed. As well as being a festival haven with the Begonia Festival held in March, the Eureka Jazz festival held in April and the Royal South St Eisteddfod held in September/October.

Along with the many cafés and beautiful restaurants where you can sample some of the local produce you may also like to wander through the weekly markets that take place in the city which are great for picking up all sorts of nick knacks to remember your holiday by. Take a walk through the nearby wineries or spend the day exploring the surrounding National Parks that you can find many wildlife species to get up close and personal with.
