What to expect
You'll board the ferry at Hillarys and collect your bike upon arrival at Rottnest. The island spans roughly 19 square kilometres—manageable by bike but requiring steady legs and decent fitness to cover properly in a day. Terrain varies from sealed paths through coastal scrub to gentle hillier stretches. Expect to share trails with other cyclists and spot quokkas lounging near roadsides, particularly around settlement areas. Bring water, sun protection and a camera; the views genuinely reward effort. Most people cycle 20–30 kilometres across the day, stopping frequently.
Good to know
A AU$25 security deposit per person is refunded once you return the bike. Children must be capable independent riders—no tandem seats or tag-alongs. Moderate fitness essential; flat isn't guaranteed. Ferry runs year-round but book ahead in summer. Bring cash or card for any food purchases on the island.
