About this tour

Explore Darwin's Top End landscapes and colonial heritage on a guided drive through Fogg Dam Reserve, one of Australia's richest wetland ecosystems. This five-hour small-group tour in a Mercedes vehicle takes maximum six travellers with guaranteed window seats, led by naturalist Geoff Barrett who unpicks the region's history whilst pointing out native birds and wildlife. The route winds through the wetlands before stopping at the legendary Humpty Doo Hotel—a authentic Territory pub where you can eat crocodile, barramundi or buffalo amongst locals.

Highlights

  • Fogg Dam Reserve: drive-through wetland park teeming with birdlife
  • Darwin's colonial past explained by your knowledgeable local guide
  • Humpty Doo Hotel: genuine outback pub with Territory game menu
  • Wildlife photography provided electronically after the tour
  • Binoculars supplied; window seats guaranteed in small vehicle
  • Airport, cruise ship or city hotel drop-off included

What to expect

You'll depart mid-morning or mid-afternoon from your accommodation, cruise ship or airport in a comfortable Mercedes with Geoff as your guide. The drive out of Darwin doubles as a history lesson—he'll talk you through the city's past whilst the landscape shifts toward wetland country. At Fogg Dam Reserve you'll slow-roll through one of the world's few drive-through national parks, binoculars ready for egrets, jabirus, magpie geese and saltwater crocodiles basking on banks. The wetland stop takes up most of the tour's time, allowing proper observation. You'll finish at the Humpty Doo Hotel—a ramshackle institution where Territory tradition runs deep. Order what appeals from their menu, sink a drink, and absorb the local atmosphere before being returned to your starting point.

Good to know

Bring sun protection and wear layers—weather can shift. Meals and drinks at the pub are at your own cost; their menu spans local game as well as standard fare. The tour suits all fitness levels but isn't recommended for children under eight. Service animals welcome.
