What to expect

You'll travel by comfortable vehicle to a location where grey-headed flying foxes congregate. The guide positions your group where you can watch hundreds of bats moving through the canopy—launching, jostling for branches, and returning with food. They're surprisingly vocal and active. Bring the supplied cameras to capture individual bats mid-flight; the guide also takes professional shots you can take home. Expect plenty of standing and looking up; the experience suits all fitness levels. Bottled water and light snacks keep you comfortable during the two-and-a-half-hour outing.

Good to know

Daytime activity makes observation easier than nocturnal bat watching. Prams and strollers are welcome for infants. Public transport reaches the meeting point. Wear comfortable shoes and bring sunscreen. Best light typically occurs mid-morning to mid-afternoon.
