Townsville is the largest city in the tropical north Queensland region and although it is primarily a centre for commerce, the armed forces and education there is a growing tourist infrastructure and tourism market. Townsville is home to the James Cook university, both the Australian army and the air force, as well as being the port and commerce centre for the regional agricultural and mining enterprises. Just offshore from Townsville is Magnetic Island and this is extremely popular as a tourist attraction. The island is very picturesque with granite boulders overlooking beautiful bays and beaches and there are some beautiful and brand new resorts to tempt the holidaymaker. The Island is serviced by both passenger and vehicular ferries that run to a regular schedule.

Townsville is a beautiful city with many parks and gardens and a waterfront that is the envy of most other coastal cities. The Strand which runs along the main beachfront has been fully redeveloped and has now become a hub of activities for locals and holidaymakers alike. There is a range of restaurants and cafes as well as a terrific water park to cool down and entertain the kids. There is also an Olympic size swimming pool. There are also two main marina areas and water sports are very popular in Townsville. The Great Barrier Reef lies offshore and there is a range of dive, snorkeling and fishing trips to choose from. A short drive to the north will take you to the rainforests of the Paluma range. Here are mountain streams and magnificent rainforest scenery that provides an excellent destination for a day tour.

Townsville is easy to access as it has both an international and domestic airport. Regular flights are available from most centres. For those who are looking for an island holiday that provides some of the best hospitality in the world then you should try Orpheus Island which lies just offshore. The island is serviced by amphibious plane from Townsville and the resort is about sensational dining and relaxation in a tropical hideaway with very limited numbers of guests. Townsville is also serviced by a number of shopping malls that provide some great shopping experiences.
